13TH, directed by Ava DuVernay, has scored an Academy Award nomination for Feature Documentary.
Congratulations to co-Director of Photography for 13TH and
Film and Video Studies Professor of Cinematography,
In 13TH DuVernay documents how the Constitution's Thirteenth Amendment led to mass incarceration in the United States. The Atlantic describes the film as "a gorgeous, evocative, and maddening exploration of words: of their power, their roots, their permanence."
"Powerful, infuriating and at times overwhelming, Ava DuVernay’s documentary 13TH will get your blood boiling and tear ducts leaking. It shakes you up, but it also challenges your ideas about the intersection of race, justice and mass incarceration in the United States, subject matter that could not sound less cinematic" says Manohla Dargis in The New York Times.
The GMU Visiting Filmmakers Series presentation of 13TH is free and open to the public.
